Simple and personal

Short Biography of Michael Kimrey and his love for newspapers.

My name is Michael and I have always loved history. Now in my sixties, born and raised in the Denver area, I have worked in building materials industry my entire career. Years ago, while working at a local lumberyard, a contractor offered to sell to me a stack of old Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post newspapers dated from 1929-1932. I was told these were newspapers that had been used as insulation in the small homes built at that time.
I couldn’t resist and bought them all. I was enthralled by seeing the actual newspaper that was published just before the stock market crash, as well as the Sunday morning comics and the movie listings at that time.
Another discovery happened while helping my sister move into her Capitol Hill apartment, a sub-divided old mansion. I found in the alley next to the dumpster a collection of 1970’s Rolling Stone Magazines. Front covers with pictures of great musical artists, ads for new released albums at the time, and musical concert tour dates.
Later in life, in Kansas City, I found a small collector shop with coins, cards and other collectibles. The treasures I found were a small collection of New York Times newspapers and Harper’s Weekly magazines – all published during the American Civil War.
All of these became my windows in time and a great escape.

I continued to find newspapers other people had saved – all with important news of the day: President Kennedy’s assassination; the Apollo landing on the moon; and collections of Life magazines from the 1960’s & 70’s. In the early 1990’s I started saving papers with stories of important current events of that time and I continued that until the death of newspapers in the 2010’s.

I have always been a sports fan, particularly of Denver teams. So, I started collecting the sports sections from the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post newspapers. These included:
· The Denver Broncos in 1976 when they made their first appearance ever in the playoffs, and went on to the Superbowl (where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys).
· The Denver Broncos in the 1980’s and 90’s with John Elway and later Peyton Manning.
· Beginning in July 1995, I kept the announcement of the Nordiques leaving Quebec to come to Denver. I kept newspapers announcing the birth of the Avalanche name and the storied successes of the Avalanche in the NHL with their first two cups and beyond.
· In 1992, I saved and collected newspaper sport sections covering the beginning of the Colorado Rockies and Coors Field, as well as the team’s major figures and events along the way.
· In 2003, the Denver Nuggets gave their fans plenty to cheer about with arrival of Carmello Anthony and his games against fellow Rockie Labron James…these boys were only 18 and 19 years old! The newspapers gave fans Great front-page pictures of the two in the games.

All of the newspapers in my collection are original. As such, they vary in their condition, and they have faded. Remember, newspapers were not intended to be saved and were made of lower quality paper and ink. That is why they are rare now - because they were rarely saved. I’ve done my best to restore them and preserve them. Each of them is a one-of-a-kind original window in time.

I have enjoyed finding, and collecting, and getting lost in these newspapers – never once thinking that newspapers would disappear. But times change - and now is the time for these wonderful newspapers to be enjoyed by others.
